The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team saw its record to 2-1 after splitting with East Marshall, 9-1 and 15-13 in its home opener Wednesday in Vinton.
Underclassmen continued their success on the mound in the young season, as junior Kody Seaton and sophomore Gunner Tranel pitched the Vikes to a 9-1 victory in the opener.
The second game was a marathon of hits, walks and errors, as East Marshall built a 15-7 lead and held on to win 15-13.
Clint Ferguson hit the Vikings' first homer of the year in the bottom of the seventh, a two-run shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the seventh.
The Vikings host Western Dubuque, the team they beat to advance to the State Tournament last year, tonight.
