In a season where most of their victories were come-from-behind wins and most of their losses came with the tying or winning run at the plate, the Vikings rode home from Williamsburg Thursday night pondering many missed opportunities.
The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball team lost a double-header, 5-4 and 5-3, while playing on one of the nicest high school baseball fields in the state.
The Vikings fell behind early in game one but came back. But twice in that game, with the go-ahead run at the plate, the Vikings hit into double plays.
Williamsburg miscues gave the Vikings an early 2-0 lead in Game two. Three errors by the Williamsburg third baseman and a walk led to one Viking run in the first inning. A balk scored the second VIking run in the second.
But Williamsburg came back, using power hitting. A home run, triple and doubles over several frames gave them the five runs they needed for the win.
Darrin Charlier started Game 1; Carson Struve Game 2. Jake Dyson pitched in both games, and Bryce Burroughs also pitched in Game 2.
The Vikings travel to Van Horne tonight to play Benton Community.
