The second season of Vinton-Shellsburg boys soccer ended Monday night with a first-round Sub-State loss at Independence, 3-1.

The Vikings and Mustangs remained scoreless until halfway through the first half, when the Mustangs scored two goals within three minutes. The hosts dded another early second-half goal.

The Vikings got on the board with just under seven minutes left with a Lasse Heddinger penalty kick. Viking goalkeeper Logan Davis helped keep the Vikings within reach with several saves, including the diving block of a penalty kick.

But the Vikings were unable to score again. Their season ends with four wins and 10 losses. For V-S, the 2013 season included wins over Independence, Williamsburg and Western Dubuque, and a 5-4 come-from-behind win over Center Point-Urbana.

OT with Benton, OT with CPU were most memorable one lost, one won, both great games!!!! You were fun to watch and wish you more success next year!!!
