Mr. Boards has just finished a very rewarding project.
A few months ago, an expectant couple visited with a photo of a handicapped-accessible crib. You see, the young first-time mother-to-be is confined to a wheelchair and she wanted to be able to put her baby to bed.
Now, Mr. Boards has built four three-in-one crib/toddler bed/full-size bed sets for his grandchildren but none of them were handicapped accessible. Each set consisted of 6 pieces: headboard, footboard, sidewalls, and bed rails. Mr. Boards told the couple that he will give it his best shot.
What is a handicapped-accessible crib? In the photo, the couple had shown the front of the crib sliding open to one side. This allows a person in a wheelchair to bring the baby through the front instead of lifting the child up over the side. Mr. Boards is not going to lie, there were a lot of obstacles to overcome in order to give this mother the ability to put her baby to bed that she so much desired. When he thought he had one problem solved, another would present itself.
It took longer than Mr. Boards wanted but he was able to deliver this crib to the young family today. Little Carson is just over a week and a half old and is currently sleeping in a bassinet in Mom and Dad's room. However, when the time comes, his new bed will be waiting and Mr. Boards' heart is warmed when he envisions Carson's mom putting him to bed for the first time while in her wheelchair.
The wood is red oak harvested from land by the Cedar River between Shellsburg and Urbana. In fact, Mr. Boards even found a bullet in one of the boards when it was being milled. The finish on the wood is a natural finish with clear satin urethane.
Mr. Boards was honored to be trusted enough to help make this young mother's dreams come true.
Mr. Boards' next project is to build the matching changing table, altered so that she can wheel her chair into the table in order to change and dress little Carson.
