AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team Oak 2 is in Walker, Iowa serving with Camp Hitaga from July 15 to August 2. The team is wrapping up trail restoration on 160 acres, which leads to main points of interest such as the Wapsipinicon River and a native prairie in the area. Other projects for the team include assisting camp counselors and camp craft activities.
Oak 2’s project goals have been to restore the trails on the Rivers Edge path that overlooks the Wapsipinicon River, remove hazardous debris such as fallen limbs, invasive plant species removal, begin the renovation of Camp Hitaga’s facilities , renovate the insides of cabins and repair the runoff and erosion damage done to camp grounds over the years. The service work being provided by NCCC provides sustainability for future generations; restoring the camp facilities provides a safe and clean environment for campers.
Camp Hitaga’s mission is to provide opportunities for fun, personal growth and leadership skills for campers in a non-competitive, natural setting. Camp Hitaga has been serving the youth since 1931. Programs include resident camp for youth in first grade through high school, seasonal outdoor programming, day camp opportunities for community day care facilities and schools, and facility rental for church and civic groups.
