Editor's Note: We occasionally feature the AmeriCorps NCCC members who are spending the year with the program at the Vinton campus as they serve people in several states. Today we feature Mackensey O'Hara from New York.
Name: Mackensey O’Hara
Hometown: Otego, New York
Mackensey is currently serving as a member of Maple 1 with the AmeriCorps NCCC at the Vinton Campus. Mackensey brings a wide variety of experience and knowledge that comes from being a former AmeriCorps member with the Montana Conservation Corps. She worked on the backcountry crew, primarily in the Shoshone National Forest, participating in trail building and maintenance work.
In addition to the Conservation Corps, Mackensey participated with Alternative Spring Break in Kentucky and Tennessee. She assisted with construction projects in the National Forests as well as working with the Snowbird Cherokee Indians.
Mackensey graduated from Unatego Central School in June 2007 and from Wilkes University in May 2011 with a BA in History. After her term of service, Mackensey would like to go to graduate school to study either library science or museum studies, or fine a job in the non-profit sector.
Mackensey and her team are currently serving in Prairie du Chien, Wis. working as camp counselors for individuals with disabilities. Before this project, Maple 1 was in Pierre, S.D. working on houses that were damaged by the floods and East Moline, Ill. assisting Living Lands and Waters, bundling, packaging, delivering and planting trees.
