The NCCC team of Maple 7 has been in Bemidji, MN since May 5th for their second round to assist the staff at Headwaters Science Center (HSC). They are working with schoolchildren and the animals that make the science center very lively on a day-to-day basis. The project also focuses on organizing the archives, taking care of the animals, guide training, building new exhibits, and being good role models for the children that come to the center daily.

One of the popular exhibits on display at HSC is the Harmonograph, a fun, art-based exhibit that allows kids to control the colors of their choosing and the design they want. The best part about the exhibit is that they are able to bring their art home. Kids also enjoy the pitching cage, with a speed-o-meter that showcases their speed once they’ve thrown the ball to the target.

The animals that reside at the center are very cherished by the team, and they always demonstrate that when the children are present. Bo, the boa constrictor is really friendly and gets a lot of attention on a daily basis, and the team enjoys sharing the experiences with the children. Feathered, furry, and scaled alike, they are a huge part in what HSC promotes in their motto, “Science and technology you can touch!”

Maple 7 also assists with the Beltrami County Fairgrounds part-time, and most of the projects are painting, cleaning up the grounds, and planting trees.
