On the first and third Saturday morning of each month, local community members Jordan (Jo) and Joaquin Carter host the Spanish Conversation Club at downtown Vinton businesses The Niche and Brickside Brew-N-Chew. The club meets from 9 to 11 A.M. and welcomes all ages and levels of learners from beginners to native speakers. There is no cost to attend.
The club was inspired "after hearing too many comments from people saying they didn't have anywhere local to practice Spanish," said Jo Carter. Participants come from Linn and Benton counties and include a wide range of ages from children to retirees. One club participant, a resident of Walker, shared that she is currently planning a trip to a Spanish-speaking country and "not everyone will know English, so I need to know at least a little bit of Spanish".
Next month the Carters are teaching a five-week introductory Spanish course for K-5 students. Classes will meet once a week at the new event space Gather at 109, also located in downtown Vinton. Lessons to include vocabulary, introductions, greetings, and family taught through a variety of games and activities. There will be authentic foods from Mexico and Latin America for students to try because "it's important to introduce culture when language learning is taking place."
Over the past four years Jo Carter has led bilingual story time events at the Vinton and Marion public libraries, North Benton Head Start, Vinton Early Learning Center, and elementary school classrooms. Registration information is available at jcarter2990@gmail.com
