In a bold and unexpected move, Iowa State Auditor Rob Sand on Tuesday announced a major change to the office's branding. Effective immediately, the State Auditor's official seal will no longer feature the iconic "Taxpayers' Watchdog." Instead, it will be replaced with a new, feline-focused emblem: "The Taxpayers' Watchcat."

"After years of tailing financial mischief, we've decided it's time to paws and rethink our approach," said Sand. "While dogs are known for their loyalty, cats are skeptical-always watching, always calculating, and always knocking unnecessary expenses off the table. We've barely scratched the surface of our potential for saving taxpayer dollars."

The new seal will feature a vigilant tabby cat perched next to the familiar locked treasure chest, eyes sharply trained on any suspicious expenditures. "Unlike a watchdog that may bark up the wrong tree, our Watchcat will keep a keen eye on every dollar, pounce on fraud, and, when necessary, hiss at wasteful spending," said Sand. "And of course, we'll be throwing waste, fraud, and abuse in the litterbox where it belongs-because when it comes to accountability, we're not kitten around."While some skeptics have yowled at the idea of shifting from a watchdog to a watchcat, Sand assured the public that the office's mission remains unchanged. "At the end of the day, whether it's a dog or a cat, our job is to keep a close eye on taxpayer dollars. The only difference is, now we'll be doing it with a little more feline finesse and nine lives of determination," said Sand. "You can bet we'll never catnap on the job, we won't let the fat cats get away with wasteful spending, and we'll always take the time to purr when someone brings us good ideas for government efficiency."

Please note it is April 1, 2025...and to play along, the Editor did inquire as to the cost of the newly designed seal :D
