National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW) is observed annually during the third full week of March. NPPW was established by Congress in 1961 and is dedicated to raising awareness about poison prevention and safety. Additionally, NPPW helps to promote the use of the Poison Help line (1-800-222-1222) for the public and healthcare providers. This year, NPPW is March 15-22, 2026, with the theme, “When the unexpected happens, Poison Help is here for you.” Whether you have general questions or a poison emergency, Poison Help is available 24/7/365.
Iowa Poison Control Center: Calls to the Iowa Poison Control Center (IPCC) are answered 24 hours a day by highly trained registered nurses and pharmacists who are Certified Specialists in Poison Information. The specialists work under the direction of physicians who are board-certified in medical toxicology.
New Chat Feature Launches During NPPW: The IPCC is excited to introduce a new Poison Help Chat feature, making it even easier for the public to connect with our poison experts. This secure online chat option provides fast, free, and confidential guidance from any internet-enabled device. Visit our website to learn more: www.iowapoison.org/chat.
