It used to be when I was younger that I tensed up whenever I saw a group of bikers roll up wherever I was. Then I met a few bikers and realized that the noise of the bikes only indicates that regular people just like noisy bikes.

This Saturday as I watched the bikers get ready to ride out to raise some cash for our Special Olympics team that I felt my heart get a little bigger as the roar of the machines were preparing to take off. I'm sure for some it was a chance to enjoy the day, but for others, it had a special place in their heart.

Whatever the reason, the 102 bikers and riders in other vehicles took off on their mission for the day. The group pulled away from the Ron Da Voo Lounge & Deli at 11:00 a.m. on their 135 mile trek.

The group made stops at the Oasis Tavern in Belle Plaine, a Lunch stop at the WILD HOGS Saloon & Eatery in Walford, the Pearl Street Social Club, Shellsburg, Wee Willys Tap, Quasqueton, Phats Pub and Grub, Brandon, wrapping up at the American Legion for supper.

The money that was raised will go toward uniforms, equipment, transportation, food & drinks, and lodging for each sport. There are weekly practices, Regional Competitions, and State Competitions. This is the one and only fundraiser for the year and how everything is funded for the athletes and families.

The Head Coach Tammy Zimmerman, Assistant Coaches Michelle Lane, and Michael Kramer, and parents volunteer their time for the athletes. The group is able to provide opportunities for all athletes involved.

Here's the link to a video of the group taking off.
