The Vinton Kiwanis Club continued it's annual tradition of handing out "A Student's Dictionary" to the Vinton-Shellsburg School District's 3rd grade classes. The dictionaries contain definitions of course as well as other important tidbits of information.

On Wednesday, Vinton's Kiwanis members delivered the books to the 3rd graders after introducing the children to the Kiwanis organization. It starts with, "Are you familiar with Kiwanis Park where the splash pad is?" and the class lights up immediately. Then they tell them about the Pancake breakfast, the Easter egg hunt, bike rodeo and other projects that happen around the community thanks to the Kiwanis.

Lexa Spiedel pointed out some information in the dictionaries. There is directions for signing the alphabet in sign language, a section about braille, facts about the states, and of course, the longest word in the English language...which takes nearly a full page at the back of the book. It looks like this.

Methionylglutaminylarginyltyrosylglutamylserylleucylphenylalanylalanylglutaminylleucyllysylglutanylarginyllysylglutamylglysylalanylphenylalanylvalylprolylphenylalanylyalylthreonylleucylglcycylaspartylprolylglicylisoleucyglutamylglutamimlserylleucyllysylisoleucylaspartylthreonylleucylisoleucylglutamylalanylglyclyalanylaspartylalanylleucyglutamylleucylgluycylisoleucylproluylphenylalanyserylaspartyprolylleucelalanylaspartylglycylprolylthreonylisolleucyglutaminylasparagimylalanythreonylleucylarginylalanylphenylalanylalanylalanylglycylvalylthreonylprolylalanylglutaminylcysteinylphenylalanylglglutamylmthionylleucalanylleucylisoleucylarginylglutaninyllysylhistidylpooyuthreonyoisoleucylprolylisoleuclglycylleucylleucylmethiolnyltyrosylalanylasbaraginylleucylvalylphenylalanylsparaginyyllysylglycylisoleucylaspartylglutamylphenylalanylyltyrosylalanylglutaminylcysteinylglutamyllysylvalylglycylvalylspartylserylvalylleucylvallalanylaspartylvalylprolylvalvlglutaminylglutamylserylalanylprolyiphenylalalrginylglutaminylalanylalanylleucylarginylhistidylasparaginylvalylalalprlylisoleucylphenylalanylisoleucylcysteinylprolyprolylaspartylalanylaspartyspartyleucylleucylarginylglutaminylisoleucylalanylseryltyroslglycylarginylglycyltyrosylthreonyltyrosylleucylleucylserylarginlalanylglycylvalylthreonylglycylalanylglutamylasparaginylarginylanylalanylleucylprolylleucylaspaaginylhitidylleucylvalylalanyllysylleucyllysylglutamyltyrosylasparagimylalanylalanyprolylprolylleucylglutaminylglycyphenlalanylglycylisoleyucylserylalanylprolylaspartymgmutaminylvalyllysylalanylalanylisoleucylalspartylalanylglycylalanylalanylglycylalanylasoleucylserylglycylserylalanylisoleucylbalyllysylisoleucylisoleucylglutamylglutaminylhistidylasparaginlisoleucylglutamylpronylgluotamyllysylmethionylluecylalanylalanyoeucyllysylvalylphenylalanylvalylglutamilylprolylmethionyllysylalanylalanylthreonylarginylserine (and it's in the pictures just scroll through them!)

The longest word contains 1,909 letters. It is the term for the formula C1289H2051N343O375S8, a protein that consists of 267 amino acids. The students spent several minutes reading through the dictionaries, trying to pronounce that word, practicing the sign language signals and sharing other information with classmates. Dictionary Day is one of the unique days that third-grade students look forward to every year.

The local Kiwanis Club members pay for the dictionaries, with their dues. Kiwanis meet every Tuesday at Pizza Ranch. If you are interested in joining them, go to their Facebook page to find out more about them HERE!
