Sometimes you think "I'll be fine, I don't need any help..." and then you might realize that there is a bit of help out there that you didn't know about.

If you are a veteran or the widow of a Veteran and you've never remarried, AND you served 90 days of active duty, (other than training) and at least 1 day during a war time period listed below, you COULD qualify for theVeteran's Pension or Survivor's Pensionthrough the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Here are the war time dates you would need to have served at least 1 day during:

WWII-December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946 OR if the veteran was in service on December 31, 1946 and had continuous service before July 26, 1947, that is considered WWII service.

Korean Conflict - June 27, 1950 through January 31, 1955

Vietnam - Novem-ber 1, 1955-May 7, 1975 and were stationed in Vietnam

Vietnam- August 5, 1964, - May 7, 1975 (for those who were not boots on ground)

Gulf War - August 2, 1990 - TBD

Surviving spouses qualify IF:
-you were legally married to the veteran for 1 year and you lived continuously with the veteran from the date of marriage until the date of death.

-did not remarry (if remarried the marriage must terminated by divorce, annulment or death prior to November 1, 1990.)

Below is a form that lists a chart to decide if your income qualifies for assistance.Be sure to take a careful look at the fact that you are able to deduct qualifying medical expenses from the gross income to qualify; this includes the cost of a nursing home.

Feel free to reach out to Cara Martin at the Benton County Veterans Affairs office for assistance in applying. She would be more than happy to help.

Her number at the office is 319-472-3150. The office is located at 811 D. Ave. Suite 34.
