Cindy Briggs always knew she would join the military; a girl wanting to follow in her father's footsteps. She accomplished that sense of fulfillment and joined the US Navy in 1972. Stationed at Great Lakes, Illinois, she was responsible for the oversight and tracking of the necessity for repairs within various naval buildings and housing units on base. From receipt of the phone call to the coordination of the correct craftsman or contractor and finally the closure of the open ticket.

Although she spent her entire naval career there in Windy City, it was nice to be close to home so she could visit her mother. It also happens to be where she met her loving husband of 48 years, Robert. Once Cindy's term of enlistment came to an end and she was honorably discharged in 1975, Robert was transferred to Korea. Luckily, it was a dependent accompanied tour and the two of them were able to make the best of their time abroad.

Looking back as she gets older, Cindy says joining the military was the best decision she's ever made and she encourages every young person to do it. It truly shows you what an honest days' worth of work is. It teaches you responsibility, punctuality, and makes you grow up.

Her wisdom has apparently stuck. Bob and Cindy have two children, six grandchildren, and one great grandson. After first serving in the Army (active duty), their son continues to serve in the Army Reserves and is currently deployed. One of their grandchildren currently serves in the Air Force and is stationed in Idaho. This makes him the 7thgeneration servicemember on Cindy's side of the family.

Cindy was the first female to serve as an American Legion Post Commander in Benton County. She currently serves as the American Legion Post 264 Vice Commander and Membership Chairperson as well as the Post 264 Auxiliary President in Urbana, Iowa. She is also a Charter Member of the Military Women's Memorial in Washington, D.C. In her free time, Cindy enjoys reading, gardening, and having a spot at the flea market in the summertime.

On behalf on Benton County, thank you for your service, Cindy.
