On April 17, 2025, students in the Agricultural Mechanics class at Vinton-Shellsburg High School got more than just a lesson, they got real-world insight from a hometown expert. Nate Edwards, fourth-generation owner of Edwards Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning in Vinton, stopped by to speak with students about his business, the value of skilled trades, and even explained a few simple home plumbing fixes. Edwards Plumbing and Heating has been a trusted name in the community since 1929, and Nate continues the legacy with a passion for both service and education.

He shared stories about growing up in the business, how the company has evolved, and what it takes to be successful in the plumbing and HVAC industry today. In his presentation, Nate emphasized that the trades are not only essential but also full of opportunity. “Skilled trades are in high demand,â€ he told students. “There’s a lot of room to grow, and if you enjoy working with your hands and solving problems, this path can be incredibly rewarding.â€ He also demonstrated a few easy at-home fixes like stopping a running toilet and tightening a leaky faucet giving students practical tools they can use right away. Freshman Violet Hainey was especially inspired by the visit. “I never really thought about plumbing as a job someone could love,â€ she said. “But hearing Mr. Edwards talking about it with so much pride made me realize how important and cool it actually is.â€ The visit wrapped up with a lively Q&A, where students asked questions about apprenticeships, what a typical day looks like, and Nate’s favorite (and least favorite) parts of the job.
