When longtime community blood drive leader Erlene McKenna passed away in 2010, there was an immediate need for someone to step forward and continue the important work. Newly retired Vinton-Shellsburg elementary teacher Kristie Davis didn’t hesitate.
“I can do that!” she said.
Davis had just retired from teaching and quickly stepped into the volunteer role, organizing the local blood drive and gathering friends to help make it a success. What began as a simple act of service soon became a lasting commitment to the community.
When Davis first began coordinating the drives, they were held in a church basement. As participation grew and the need for accessibility and parking became more important, the location was moved to the Vinton Skate Center. Davis is especially grateful to the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department for providing the space and for their continued support and helpfulness over the years.
In recognition of her dedication, Davis received the Outstanding Volunteer Award and was honored at a special dinner in Cedar Rapids.
Over her 16 years of service, Davis has helped the community collect an incredible 2,344 pints of blood — the equivalent of about 293 gallons. Those donations have helped save countless lives and ensured that hospitals have the blood supply they need for patients in emergencies, surgeries, and ongoing medical treatments.
Davis’ willingness to say “I can do that” continues to make a meaningful difference in the Vinton community. Now, Kris Howes-Vonstein, also a retired teacher in 2024 after 36 years, like Kristie, she accepted the position saying, "I think I can do that."
The next date to donate blood will be on May 21, 2026 from 12:30-5:30 p.m. at the Vinton Skate Center...Walk-ins are welcome!
While you’re there, introduce yourself to Kris, she'd be more than happy to share a bit about the process...she said, "even if you are not ready to donate yet!"
