Georgia Lea (Niedert) Hovenga, age 53, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2019, at her home in Vinton.

Funeral Services will be held at 12:00 PM Friday, September 6, 2019 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton with Pastor Adam Todd officiating.  Interment will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Vinton.  Visitation will be held from 9:00 AM until 11:45 AM on Friday at the funeral home.  A memorial fund has been established.

Georgia was born on September 8, 1965, in Waterloo, to James and Marilyn (Pettit) Niedert.  Georgia worked in the hospitality and food service industry and was employed locally as a cook at Bob’s Diner and the Ron-Da-Voo in Vinton.  She loved the outdoors and all God’s creatures, great and small.  She had a special affinity for birds.  Georgia enjoyed traveling the country on foot with her long-time companion, Gene Peterson.

She is survived by her sisters, Lori Ulrichs of Clarksville, Candice (Marc) Heuchelin of Edgewood, and Penny Doty of Vinton; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Cecil Sommerfelt; and her nephews, Matthew Simon Doty and Jay L. McIntyre.
