Bonnitta (Bonnie) J. Johnston, 79, passed away on February 16, 2023, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids. A Memorial Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 3:00 Saturday, June 3rd, at Phillips Funeral Home (212 E 6th St -Vinton) followed by an internment service at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton.

Bonnie was born December 16, 1943, in Vinton, where she lived during her childhood. She also lived part of her adult life in South Bend, IN and Birmingham, NY, with the majority of her later life in Central City, IA. A certified caregiver by career, Bonnie provided compassionate care for those in their senior years both in Central City and Cedar Rapids. Her caregiving nature was reflected in her relationships with family, friends and neighbors, as well as her garden she lovingly tended each year. Bonnie was known by all for her optimistic personality and generosity, and many neighbors in the apartment complex where she lived became close friends. Bonnie's apartment and porch were often the 'gathering place' where she and her friends spent many hours sharing laughter, life stories, good times, and challenging times.

Bonnie's caregiving nature continued to shine as she routinely checked on many in the apartments, assisting those with health challenges. Bonnie enjoyed cooking, and for years she cooked large holiday dinners to share with neighbors. After her own health imposed limitations, many neighbors shared their dinners with her. This past year Bonnie's tasty malted shakes were a hit, and with her friend Dawn providing tall old fashioned malt glasses, they enjoyed these cold treats on her porch during hot summer days.

She is survived by her sister, Beverly Houston, her goddaughter Cynthia Houston, special cousins Carol Crisman and Jacki Redfern, special nieces Monica Kueny and Renee Schermerhorn, as well as many other cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, William Frank Bower and Ethel Josephine (Wheeler) Bower; brothers Allen, William, and James Bower; and sister Barbara Schermerhorn.

Bonnie's laughter, loving hugs, and kind heart are greatly missed by her family and dear friends.
