Surrounded by his loving family, Richard "Dick" Meyer, 86, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2024, at Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, is caring for Dick and his family.
Dick was born August 24, 1937 in rural Garrison, the son of Henry and Beulah (Geiger) Meyer. He was a graduate of Garrison High School. In 1960, Dick was united in marriage to Judy McBride. To this union, four children were born. The couple later divorced. On August 22, 1994, Dick was united in marriage to JoAnn Barge at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Dick's working career included being a bookkeeper to a partner at Livestock Sale Barn, elevator manager, hog buyer, Benton County Recycling and farming. As a youngster, he was a member of 4-H, advancing to become a 4-H leader, member of Rural young people, various church positions, Kiwanis Day Breaker, Eagles Club, and a total of 57 years with the Vinton fair board serving as secretary, director and president.
If Dick wasn't busy doing carpentry work, you could find him at his second home, the Vinton Fairgrounds.
Left to cherish Dick's memory are his wife, JoAnn; children: Kent (Susan), Greg (Jodi), Kelley (Ken), and Scott (Jess); step-children: Mark (Tammy), Brenda (Randy), and Shannon (Alex); sixteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers: Robert (JoAnn) and Eldo (Shirley); brother-in-law, Dave Block; and former wife, Judy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ruth; and beloved dog, Lucy.
A memorial fund has been established.
