George "Tom" Hanna, 93, passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at his home in Vinton, surrounded by his loving family.
A Celebration of Tom's life will be held at a later date. Interment with military rites will be held at Maplewood Cemetery in Vinton.
Tom was born on January 28, 1931, in Vinton to George Raymond and Julia Alma (Gustafson) Hanna. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1949. Tom served his Country in the United States Navy from 1949 through 1953 as an aviation electrician third class. Following his discharge, Tom worked for the United States Postal Service until his retirement. He was united in marriage to Shirley Kersten on February 8, 1968, in Kirksville, MO. Shirley preceded Tom in death in 1995.
He was a member of the V.F.W. the Geo G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 in Vinton, and the Vinton Country Club. Tom enjoyed golf, fishing and boating, and trips to the casino with his longtime best friend and companion, Zybel Abernathey. Tom was known for his quick wit and zest for life.
In addition to Zybel, Tom is survived by his children, Angela (Dave) Ramp of Woodinville, WA, Christy (Terry) Smith of Lake Forest Park, WA, Scott (Maria) Hanna of North Bend, WA; step-daughter, LuAnn (David) Bohnsack of Phoenix, AZ; step son, Bob Fuehrer of Shellsburg; 6 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 step great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and Zybel's children, Dr. Chad (Sarina) Abernathey of Cedar Rapids, Chet (Debra) Abernathey of Cedar Rapids, Dawn (Doug) Kalina of Ely, MN, and Cord (Julie) Abernathey of Cary, IL
In addition to his wife Shirley, and his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his step-grandson, Tanner Bohnsack brother, Stewart Hanna, and his wife Barbara; and his sister Judy Fried.
