Dear Editor,

Life begins at the point of conception. No one can deny that after a human being is conceived it will develop into the very same being as those debating this issue. What astounds me is that those who favor abortion went through an identical development stage as the being they are condemning to death. Would these very same people agree that a similar choice should have been made about their own existence? How many human lives have been lost that could have added to our society in so many ways?Abortion today is used primarily as a birth control of convenience because people are too self-centered to take precautions. They prefer their own pleasurable self-indulgence over the care and sanctity of the life they created. Whatever happened to taking responsibility for one's actions in this country? Is it too much to ask a woman who has conceived to place the child into adoption? Nine months of discomfort is nothing compared to life in prison for voluntary manslaughter! And what about consenting to sex with a male; is that part of the equation too? Or has abortion just become another extension of the women's liberation movement that started in the late 60s and coincidently boosted membership on or about the same date as Roe V. Wade?Does the father of the child have a say in this? And what about theConstitution of the United States? Are not all people conceived in this country deserving of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? I believe abortion is a crime against humanity and should be outlawed. We need to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision and get back to cherishing life in this country. A country that murders its children cannot be far from self-destruction.Back in 1973 a Supreme Court decision {Roe v. Wade} legalized abortion by a 7-2 vote. Six of the seven justices in the majority were Republican appointees. The only Democrat appointee, Byron White, voted against Roe v. Wade. Back then the Republican motto was government is best that governs least. Hence the Republicans giveth and the Republicans taketh away.Today's Republicans {by the way} couldn't care less about abortion. They just want to undermine all the other freedoms Americans were granted by the Constitution especially economic rights.

RB January 30, 2023, 1:27 pm A total ban, even in case of rape or incest, is not the answer either. I agree that it is a woman’s body and it’s her choice, not the government’s. Also, it seems the criticism about responsibility is always directed at a woman. How about a man having some accountability and taking precautions? How many men leave the woman alone to raise the child? If someone gets a woman pregnant they should have financial obligations too. If they/he could resist their urges conception wouldn’t occur.
RB January 30, 2023, 1:53 pm Could you please provide proof that most abortions are birth control? I dont believe that to be true and would like to see actual statistics. Also could you provide an exact number of the men who actually hang around and want to be part of raising a baby they werent expecting? I have not seen many of those, but if they exist, i would like to know. Thanks.
JS January 30, 2023, 5:16 pm If one reads the Declaration of Independence by Jefferson one reads that we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness (Industry). These rights mentioned are God-given and should be protected by man's government (meaning women as well) There may be circumstances where men/women make a different judgment -- such as may occur when a life is endangered by some medical complication. There seems to be a problem in stating exact numbers -- since 1970 I have heard as much as 70,000,000 or as many as north of 3,000 per day. I tried to find an exact number but was unable to do so. But if the daily number is close I find it hard to imagine that these are all due to medical complications. There is the latest SCOTUS decision as well as the number of abortions seems to have declined. Probably due to the establishment of Crisis Pregnancy Centers and funding of image machines where the mom can see her baby and hear the heart beating. Whatever, life is precious and needs protection! As my farm background suggests moms will jeopardize themselves to protect their young. I learned very early to "Not poke Mamma Bear". As a livestock person learns don't place yourself in danger.
Regards and blessings.
