VINTON -- A big crowd filled the Vinton-Shellsburg baseball field grounds Saturday for the first "Pitches For Pins" fund-raiser for the VIking and Vikette wrestling programs. A team of local law enforcement faced off against members of the wrestling team -- along with a couple of "ringers" -- and while the wrestlers led most of the way, the cops came back to take a 16-14 victory; not that the outcome mattered that much.

The wrestlers had a little help along the way as former Iowa Hawkeye wrestlers Mark Ironside and Matt McDonough came along. Ironside was a two-time NCAA champion and the winner of the 1998 Hodge Trophy -- college wrestling's Heisman -- while McDonough was also a two-time NCAA champion for the Hawks.

In additon to the ballgame, the VPD team also won a tug-of-war against the wrestlers (although it should be pointed out that the cops had cleats on and the wrestlers didn't...just saying...;)
