Sports : Special Olympics IA Mid-Winter Tournament Mar. 11 & 12 in Iowa City & Coralville

~The tournament is open to the public, and admission is free.~

Athletes and Unified partners from across the state will assemble in Iowa City and Coralville on March 11 and 12 to compete in the Special Olympics Iowa Mid-Winter Tournament.

The Mid-Winter Tournament will feature over 900 athletes and Unified partners competing in basketball skills, team basketball, cheer and dance, gymnastics, and powerlifting competitions. For Team Special Olympics Iowa athletes competing in cheer and dance, basketball, and powerlifting, the Mid-Winter Tournament will be the final opportunity to compete in their respective sports before leaving for the 2022 Special Olympics USA Games this June.

"The tournament is one of Special Olympics Iowa's biggest and most highly anticipated competitions of the year," said John Kliegl Special Olympics Iowa President and CEO.

The tournament will officially begin on Friday, March 11 at 5:00 p.m. with the Opening Ceremony and athlete banquet at the Hyatt Regency Coralville. Following the banquet, athletes will head to the Xtream Arena for the Special Olympics Night at the Iowa Heartlanders game.

On March 12, the basketball skills, cheer and dance, and team basketball competitions begin at 9 a.m., with powerlifting starting at 9:30 a.m. and gymnastics beginning at 9:45 a.m. The team basketball (3-on-3 and 5-on-5) and gymnastics competitions will be held at the University of Iowa Field House, while Hyatt Regency Coralville will host cheer and dance. The powerlifting competition will be held at Pro-Fit Gym. The basketball skills competition has a new home at the GreenState Family Fieldhouse.
