Sports : Swim Results: August 22 and 25

The team started our season off with a great showing against Williamsburg August 22 at home. VS-CPU won a close team race 84-80 against a team twice their size, winning every event and taking both first and second in a couple key races late in the meet to pull ahead for the final score.
The team captains Justyce Dominick, Lauren Moore and Carleigh Wilson certainly pulled their weight Monday night - each winning all of their individual events and helping relays take firsts as well.
Our girls swam very well for the first meet out of the gate - I'm happy with where our times are. When an athlete posts their personal best time at the first meet, you know it's going to be a fun season - and we had several girls do just that.~~~VS-CPU had tough competition against Waterloo East & West last night in a dual at Waterloo. The final team scores were 53-126, reflecting a talented Waterloo squad that outnumbered VS-CPU almost 3-1 and scored 13 unanswered points in diving (a division in which VS-CPU does not compete due to lack of diving boards in the home facility). But there were plenty of bright spots apart from the overall team score.
Senior captains Lauren Moore and Justyce Dominick each won individual events - Lauren taking the 200 Freestyle in a new personal best and Justyce taking the 50 and 500 Freestyle. Justyce finished the 500 Freestyle in 6:11.27, more than 45 seconds ahead of 2nd place.
Tori Elwick swam a strong anchor to bring home 2nd place in the Medley Relay, and swam a new personal best of 1:03.69 in the 100 Freestyle - narrowly missing first place by just .4 seconds to former teammate and Union swimmer Molly Clark (Union school board voted to change co-op agreements to swim with Waterloo instead of VS last May). Tori touched the wall .31 seconds ahead of the other former teammate and Union swimmer Charlie Keegan in the 100 Breaststroke.
It was good to see former swimmers again, and to watch them have solid times in their events. The girls were happy to see each other again too - it's good to see lasting bonds among teammates, even if they're competing against each other at this time.
Lots of VS swimmers had great times last night, especially considering how early in the season it still is. The newcomers are really coming into their own - gaining confidence and comfort in the pool each day. They're fast learners and have stepped up to take on challenges that can be pretty daunting to a first year competitor. Audriana Rilling took a swing at the 100 Freestyle, filling in for a teammate in the 400 Freestyle Relay, and absolutely crushed it. Her goal was to split 1:45, she came in at 1:25 to help her relay place 2nd in the event.
We're in competition next at Grinnell Thursday, Septwmber 1.
