Folks in Vinton are accustomed to seeing the Monkeytown vans making deliveries. But on Wednesday afternoon, the vans were parked because the drivers were busy making an extra special delivery, on foot, to the Benton County Food Pantry. The drivers walked boxes of nonperishable items from their back door to their neighbors to the north, the Benton County Food Pantry, where Pantry Co-Director Sherry Crawford was waiting with an enthusiastic smile.
“This is so great, these items, diapers, shampoo, soaps are so expensive for our clients to purchase”, she said. “This will really help them out.” The pantry usually shelves canned goods and other non perishable food items, but it is rare to see items like the ones Monkeytown donated. “We have been extraordinarily blessed with exceptional donations this year. It’s remarkable. People are getting the word out that we need more than just green beans and corn”, Crawford said. “People always use those things, so those are good too”. The food pantry appreciates all donations.
Monkeytown’s Top Banana Kurt Karr said, “We found ourselves with some excess inventory, and it occurred to us that the upcoming summer months are usually a difficult time for families when the kids are out of school. We’re happy to be able to help”.
The Benton County Food Pantry works with the Social Services office in the county to determine a family’s need. The pantry is open Tuesdays and Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you would like to contact the pantry either to donate or to get help, call the Benton County Social Services department at 472-4743.
