Retail stores across the country have begun the annual countdown to the holiday season. Brush up on these holiday shopping tips to help you spread holiday cheer without ruining your finances for the New Year.

Budgeting Tips

Control holiday spending by having a game plan. Make a gift list for the people you plan to buy for and how much you will spend on each person. Shop early to avoid last minute purchases that exceed your budget. Consider paying for gifts in cash. You’ll be less likely to overspend if you can see how much you’ve spent. If you prefer to pay by debit or credit card, keep an eye on your balance. Overdraft charges and late payments can add up quickly.

Online Shopping

Shopping online can help you save time, but it’s important to know what you’re buying and who you are buying it from. If you’re skeptical, it’s best to take your business elsewhere. Always read the online refund and return policies before making a purchase. Print and save all records, including online receipts and product descriptions. Check your credit card statement for accurate charges and immediately report any unusual charges.

Protect Your Identity

Don’t let the hustle and bustle of the holidays distract you from keeping your personal information safe. Avoid doing business with retailers that request confidential personal information, such as a Social Security number. Never allow a retailer to photocopy your driver’s license or other forms of personal identification.
