Kupka takes third in State Fair Hog and Corn Heaven cooking event

Phil Dicks of Grundy Center won first place and a $300 cash award in the Des Moines Register's Hog and Corn Heaven competition, judged Wednesday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. Bridget Lottman of Norwalk earned second place and $200. Carrie Kupka of Walford claimed third place and $100. Contestants were challenged to create an award winning dish that includes both pork and corn.

Area residents do well at State Fair Youth Dairy Cattle Show

Young competitors from across Iowa earned breed championships in the Youth Dairy Cattle Show judged Tuesday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. Wes Lyons named to Drake President's List

Wesley Lyons of Vinton is among students who were named to the President's List at Drake University. This academic honor is achieved by earning a straight-A GPA of 4.0 for the Spring 2015 semester. Drake University is a midsize, private university in Des Moines, Iowa, enrolling more than 3,300 undergraduate and 1,700 graduate students from 40 states and approximately 40 countries.

Shelby Karr wins Grand Champion honor at State Far Market Lamb Show

Shelby Karr with the judge & her family: Mike, Chris and sister Ellie, & her State Champion lamb.  Shelby Karr of Newhall won Grand Champion Market Lamb honors in the 4-H Market Lamb Show judged Monday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. Brooke Kuesel of Victor exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb. Kylie Silliman of Fremont claimed third place, Karlyn Snider of Rhodes claimed fourth place and Brooke Snider of Rhodes received the fifth place Market Lamb title.

Grovert Twins win State Fair 'Look Alike' contest again

Jenna & Nora Grovert - or is it Nora and Jenna? The twins won for 4th time at State Fair. Since they were just five months old, Jenna and Nora Grovert have been turning heads and winning contests as identical twins. The daughters of Paul and Janet Grovert made their first appearance at the Iowa State Fair in 2010. They have returned each year since and have four times earned the first place "Most Alike" ribbon for their age group.

Richard Siek family earns many ribbons in State Fair Feeder Calf Show

Cattle farms from across the Midwest were recognized for their top quality cattle in the Beef Feeder Calf show judged Saturday at the 2015 Iowa State Fair. The Richard Siek family of rural Blairstown earned many ribbons. Christo Cattle of Albion, Neb., took top honors, winning Grand Champion Market Animal and Grand Champion Market Heifer titles.

Van Horne youths Schmidt, Sonka and Brecht earn honors in State Fair Swine Show

Ben Jacobson of Clarion showed the Grand Champion Market Pig at the FFA Market Swine contest judged Thursday during the 2015 Iowa State Fair. Alex Alliger of Gowrie claimed Reserve Grand Champion Market Pig honors. Alexis Delaney of DeWitt won Champion Purebred Market Swine honors, and Cory Sampson of Nevada received Reserve Champion Purebred Market Swine honors.

Newhall's Nielsons earn many ribbons in state fair Apiary event

The Apiary competition brought out competitors' stingers when it was judged prior to the start of the 2015 Iowa State Fair.  Deb and Dennis Nielson of Newhall were among the ribbon winners in several categories, and Deb won first place in the Apiary Photography event. All exhibitor entries were products of the exhibitor's apiary unless otherwise specified.

Dorothy Olszyk joins NCCC staff at Vinton campus‏

Dorothy Olszyk is originally from Eugene, Oregon and has recently been hired as the Assistant Member Support Specialist for the North Central Region. She graduated in May 2014 from the University of Portland in Oregon with a Bachelor’s of Arts in Communications with a focus in Public Relations. During that time she was a feature writer for HER campus, an online magazine for women.
