Matthew Gerhold features original musical compositions in spring recital

Music composed by Concordia University, Nebraska students will be featured in a recital on April 20, 2016, at 7 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Music Center on campus. Participants in the recital include: Matthew Gerhold, a freshman from Atkins, Iowa None of this music has been heard before. The student composers create the music, recruit performers for their works and organize their rehearsals, and many are participating in their own pieces as performers or conducting.

Peter Thedens Inducted into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi

Peter Thedens of Walker, Iowa, was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Thedens is pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering at Iowa State University. Thedens is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year.

Hanson ranks in top 2 percent in business at Iowa State University

Katherine Hanson of Vinton, has achieved academic ranking in the top 2 percent of students in the College of Business at Iowa State University. Congratulations!

An area student has achieved academic ranking in the top 2 percent of students in the College of Engineering at Iowa State University. From Walford, Logan Heitz, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences. Congratulations Logan!

Greta Geiken retires from VPRD

Greta Geiken retired Friday from the Vinton Parks and Rec Department. At age 85, it's now retirement time for Greta Geiken. The Vinton Parks and Rec Department staff joined director Brad Barker at the Rec Center on Friday for a small party for Greta, who began working there around 1998. Greta, who had worked for many years at the Vinton Lutheran Home, enrolled in the Green Thumb employment program for senior citizens, and was assigned to the Rec Center, welcoming visitors and helping with office duties.

Area student ranks in top 2 percent in human sciences at Iowa State University

Both Bailey and Payton Leonard,  from Vinton, have achieved academic ranking in the top 2 percent of students in the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University.  Congratulations!

Kersten King was named to Augustana College winter term Dean's List

Kersten King, a senior majoring in Communication Sciences & Disorders and Communication Studies from Dysart, IA, was among the students named to Augustana College's 2015 winter term Dean's List. Founded in 1860, Augustana College is a selective four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences. The college is recognized for the innovative program Augie Choice, which provides each student up to $2,000 to pursue a high-impact learning experience such as study abroad, an internship or research with a professor.

Ternus-Hackman engagement announced

Martin & Connie Ternus of Vinton are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Molly Ternus to Tyler Hackman, son of Robert & Laurine Hackman of Lawler. The couple met at the University of Iowa. Molly is a school-based speech-language pathologist and Tyler is the marketing coordinator for a human resource consulting company.

FEBURARY 24, 2016 The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc; District II and Central Region met at Pizza Ranch at 11:30 am for lunch, the program and the meeting. The program was given by Jennifer Fencl, Cedar Rapids on “The do's and the don'ts of recycling here in Vinton. It was a very informative and interesting program.

Nominations Open for State Fair Award to Recognize Farm Family Values

The Iowa State Fair and WHO News Radio 1040 are searching for nominations for the 2016 Way We Live Award to honor farm families that exemplify the unique values derived from hard work and a love for the occupation of farming. To enter or nominate someone you know, submit an entry form along with a 500-1500 word essay describing how living on a farm and choosing the occupation of farming has shaped the family's life.
