Decorate Your Own Horse Statue for Display at the State Fair

The Iowa State Fair will celebrate our agricultural roots with a limited number of 3 ¼ foot tall painted concrete horses on display throughout the grounds during the 2015 Fair, August 13-23. Individuals, clubs and companies are invited to submit their own designs for these sculptures by May 15. To enter, submit an entry form along with a written description and detailed drawing of the proposed paint design.

Many diggers put themselves at risk by not calling 811

Before you do any digging this year, remember to call 811 at least three days before turning dirt. Just last year, more than 319,000 of our customers, contractors and city workers called 811 to locate buried lines. That’s the most calls to 811 our area has seen in at least the last six years. “That’s great progress,” said Richard Sublett, senior manager of compliance and operational performance – Alliant Energy.

Mount Mercy University recognizes February 2015 graduates

Cashman, Sweet prepare for Kirkwood floral show

Two Vinton women are preparing for the Kirkwood 2nd semester Horticulture/Floral Careers design show. Emily Cashman and Sue Sweet will be making arrangements for the public to view, along with several othe class members The event takes place from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 10. "All of us will make two arrangements and we will go on stage in from of the audience and commentate on them," says Cashman.

$100+2: Bethlehem Lutheran Church Celebrates by giving to Shellsburg library

On March 29, 2015, Bethlehem Lutheran Church presented a gift of $102 to the Shellsburg Public Library. The Shellsburg Library opened its doors on September 19, 1970.  It has occupied three different building since its inception. In 1992, the library broke ground at its present location of 110 Main Street and the building consists of two portable buildings owned previously by the school system.

Shellsburg writer earns 2nd in Statewide VFW essay contest

Clayton Johnson received this gift from the local VFW in honor of his 2nd place essay. Shellsburg 4th-grader Clayton Johnson received a special gift on Friday, in honor of his 2nd place in the Iowa VFW essay class.  A student in Mrs. Walker's class, Johnson had his essay chosen as the best among fourth grade entries in the V-S contest, and later in the District judging. His essay advanced to state, where he brought home the silver medal, and a few prizes from the VFW.

Today, when the family and friends of the late Doris Becker gather for her funeral, I hope someone remembers this story – the story that introduced me to Doris shortly after I arrived in Vinton in the spring of 2003. Mid-April, 1973. A sudden, historical snowstorm. An accident on Highway 218, not far from the corner where Doris and her husband, Vince, lived and ran a saw mill for a half-century.

Pine Wood Derby: Scouts receive trophies for fastest, most creative racers

Pack 47 Cub Scouts held their annual Pine Wood Derby on Saturday. Winners were: Keyan Cook, Tigers; Miles Neblung, Wolf; Travis Bender, Bear; and Ian Vrba, Webelo 1. Scouts were also honored for creativity in decorating their vehicles. Miles Neblung also won Judge’s Choice. Dakota Slager was honored for the best paint and Travis Bender for best design.

V-S FFA receives Superior Chapter Award at District Convention

On March 14th, 2015, fourteen Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter members attended District Convention at the Benton Community High School.   While at Districts, the chapter was recognized with a Superior National Chapter Award along with 3 Academic Achievement Awards for senior members that have over a 3.5 GPA and have been a FFA member for at least three years.
