For the first year ever, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter held a local Greenhand night for new FFA members on Tuesday October 1, 2013.

“Greenhand” stands for a first year member in FFA, not necessarily just for the freshmen, though our night was not just limited to the first year members, anyone was welcome to come.

The purpose of our night was to teach the Greenhands more about various aspects of FFA and the opportunities through FFA, as well as getting them more involved, meeting new people, and one on one time meeting the officers.

The sessions that we held for the members and parents to come to were: what is FFA/opportunities in FFA, communication and leadership, careers in agriculture/SAE, personality tests and colors, and skill and leadership career development events.

In each class the officers taught about their subject and interacted with the members, as well as having an activity for the members to have fun and work hands on with. We had a turnout of about twenty members, and have had positive feedback from them about how it all went.

Each member also received an FFA water bottle and an FFA pen for coming to our Greenhand Night.

Overall it was a very successful night and first time event, and we hope to do it again in the years to come!
