Two high school juniors have been chosen to represent ECI REC in Washington, D.C., on the Youth Tour this June. The two winners, Jamie Thompson and Kirstie Martin, will visit historical sites, spend a day on Capitol Hill, meet congressional leaders, and more.
Jamie attends Vinton-Shellsburg High School and is the daughter of Julie Barnes of Palo. Jamie is very active in band—she is the low brass section leader for marching band and the trombone section leader/first chair trombonist for the concert and jazz bands. She is routinely featured as a soloist during jazz and marching band competition seasons. In addition, Jamie participates in speech competitions, and in 2014 she was inducted as an All-State Individual Speech Performer in the literary programs category. She is a Junior Student Senate class representative, maintains a grade point average of 4.0, and is a member of the National Honor Society. Other past and present activities include JV/varsity volleyball, club volleyball, track, and choir.
Kirstie is an Independence High School junior and the daughter of Curt and Deb Martin of Independence. Some of her school activities include band, golf (she ranked in the top 25 at Wamac), yearbook, basketball, TAG, and FFA. She is a Fight Like a Mustang member, Battle of the Books State Qualifier, and the junior class president. Additionally, Kristie maintains an honor roll status, has come in first and second in the Iowa poetry contest, received a Spotlight on Education Award, and logged over 200 service hours for Silver Cord.
In addition to their dream of visiting Washington, D.C., both juniors have a deep interest in government and politics. Congratulations Jamie and Kirstie—we look forward to hearing about your experiences in the nation’s capital!
