AmeriCorps NCCC team Cedar 6 is serving an eight-week project in Minot, N.D. The team is working with Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) to address the great need after the city’s major flooding in 2011. The flooding caused close to 12,000 Minot residents to be evacuated. Many of these residents had extensive damage to their homes.

When Cedar 6 began the project with LDR, over 100 houses were still damaged. The team is focusing their efforts on house demolition, power washing and sanitizing houses, and hanging drywall. Cedar 6 has been making swift progress with the houses, including, but not limited to, successfully demolishing two houses and sanitizing five.

Several weekends have been used to volunteer with additional organizations. The team volunteered for the USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive. They cleaned the grounds at the Roosevelt Park Zoo to help the zoo prepare to bring their animals back for the first time after the flood. Courtyard and lawn maintenance was provided at Trinity Homes, a rehabilitation and assisted living facility. Cedar 6 also spent 12 hours overnight assisting with the operation of Minot’s 2013 Relay for Life.
