Robert Barker, from Lapeer, Mich., is a member of Cedar 4 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 4 is made up of nine people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
When asked why he joined NCCC, Robert said that it was “to make a change in my life, and most importantly others. (I want) to get things done and get back that great feeling of helping out in my country and other people.”
Robert, known to most as Bob, brings several skills with him to NCCC, which help him be successful throughout his term with the program. He has skills in cooking, running, helping others and conflict management.
Prior to NCCC, Bob was working at a factory. He attended one semester at Kalamazoo Valley Community College, studying computer science and culinary skills. He graduated from Lapeer East High School in 2010. After finishing the program, Bob hopes to find ways to continue helping others and making an impact in their lives.
Cedar 4 is currently working from August 9 to September 6 with Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The team is assisting in the construction of new and rehabilitated homes for this Iowa affiliate. Homes are in various stages, which allows the members to perform a variety of work from framing to roofing and painting. The team is assisting volunteers on the weekend on various construction tasks. The construction of these homes allows the sponsor to continue working on them during the winter months.
