Eric Docherty, from Hampton, Penn., is a member of Maple 3 in NCCC’s Class 19. He arrived in Vinton on February 5, 2013, to start his 10-month service term on a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 3 is made up of 10 people from across the country, and they are serving together in a number of service projects across the North Central Region throughout their term.
When asked why he joined NCCC, Eric said, “I've lived a very privileged life and have long taken this comfort for granted. I feel a strong need to expand my horizons and understand what it really means to be a contributing, productive member of society.”
Eric brings several skills with him to NCCC, which help him be successful throughout his term with the program. He has a strong work ethic and a drive to do something meaningful in his life.
Prior to NCCC, Eric was working and attending school at a local community college. He graduated from Hampton High School in 2008. After finishing the program, Eric hopes to be able to take what he’s seen and experienced and spread it to others.
“I personally know four people who have done a term of service with Americorps NCCC, and each has found new focus and perspective on life,” Eric said. “They all tell me it was hard and not always fun, but they wouldn't ever take back their time in service. Some of them even lament the fact that they are in careers and cannot serve again.”
Maple 3 just finished a project which ran from August 9 to September 26 with Jones County Conservation Board in Center Junction, Iowa. The team assisted with preserving a natural area and removed brush at various properties owned by Jones County Conservation Board.
