Name: Robert Lindsey

Hometown: Memphis, TN

NCCC Team: Cedar 3

Robert graduated from Kingsbury High School in 2010. He considers himself to be a natural leader. In high school he led his team to the National Youth Leadership Conference. Before NCCC started, Robert was working at Taco Bell and volunteering at Bridges. He found about NCCC when he attended a job fair and there was an AmeriCorps NCCC booth. When asked why he chose to do a term of national service, Robert said, “I chose to do a year of service because I am dedicated to helping people and giving back to my community. I have always loved to travel and meet new people. I believe AmeriCorps NCCC will give me great experiences. Also I do not want to limit myself to staying in the same city. There is so much more outside of Memphis and I would love to explore the much more”. After finishing this year with NCCC, Robert would love to do another year of service if possible. He feels as if he has already found his calling in life. He wants to serve in other AmeriCorps Programs and hopefully go into the Peace Corps as well. He also plans on attending college to receive his Bachelors in Nursing. He plans to continue volunteering as if his service year never ended. Besides, Tennessee isn't called the volunteer state for nothing.

Robert and Cedar 3 are installing the county’s new hiking trail system, removing invasive plant species, and training natural area volunteers. The team’s completed work will result in a community garden where children can have a safe place to play. The garden will also have accessible water to grow healthy food. Building new trails will allow local Milwaukee residents to enjoy the environment rarely found in an urban area. Corps Members are removing invasive plants and replacing them with healthy plants to ensure that the park will not be overtaken by plants that could harm the park. Corps Members are also working with local high school and college volunteers as well as training and recruiting other people to join and volunteer.
