September 11 is a day that has become a national day of service. NCCC FEMA Corps team, Pine 6, participated in this service day by partnering with Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity for two days providing home construction in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Pine 6 was tasked with installing interior walls to enable the setting of the roof trusses the following week. The team members used basic construction and tool skills such as reading a floor plan, measuring accurately and hammering nails to secure the walls. By the completion of the two day service assignment, the team successfully installed 17 interior walls and one exterior wall of what will soon be someone’s home.
Pine 6 learned vital skills such as team building, leadership and construction which will be utilized throughout their term of service. Also, the work site supervisors encouraged service learning which allowed Pine 6 to learn how Iowa Heartland Habitat for Humanity provides safe, simple and affordable housing.
