Another totally fun and enjoyable day is in store at Garrison’s annual Fun Day Celebration on Saturday, July 12. This event is also the community’s annual celebration. Activities will be held at the park, on Main Street and at the Hitchin Post.

The day begins with the 2nd annual Howard Schoonover Memorial and Cancer Awareness Poker Run Fundraiser with Registration at the Hitchin’ Post at 8 AM a.m. and departure at 9 AM. Proceeds will be donated to the Survivors of Benton County. Entry fee is $10 per rider. For information call Joe at 319-560-3733.

Activities at the park begin at 2 p.m. with the second annual KidsZone Health and Safety Fair from 2 pm to 4:00 p.m. The first 100 kids receive a goodie bag. There will be 20 booths with the following organizations will be in attendance: Vinton Shellsburg FFA , Benton County Emergency Management , Benton County Sherriff, Benton County Public Health Department, Benton County Conservation, Benton Community FFA, Benton Recycle, Dentist Sara Stuefen, Farm Safety 4 Just Kids, Garrison Library, Garrison Fire Dept., Garrison First Responders, Hawk-I, ISU Extension, Juvenile Diabetes Association, Life Line Resources, Mt. Auburn Fire Dept., North Benton Ambulance, Old Creamy Nature Trail Committee, Operation Lifesaver, East Central Iowa REC, Benton County Rescue 6, St. Luke’s Hospital, Stand for Silent, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Storm Chasers, Tae Kwon Do, Total Balance, U of I Mobile Museum, Virginia Gay Hospital, Vinton Cheerleaders, Benton County Conservation, Linn County Hazmat, Vinton Fire Dept., WIC and Fisher Towing, Garrison Lions Club. Ten bicycles with helmets will be given away along with many free passes to fun spots..

The 1st Annual Garrison Show and Shine Car Show held from 2 pm to at 5 PM on Main Street. Registration is $10. There will be trophies and cash prizes thanks to the support of local donors. The awards will be presented after the cruise for the following categories Best Ford, Best GM, Best Dodge and Best of Show. For more information on the car cruise contact Steve Ary at 477-8148.

The annual dance and barbeque will return to the Hitchin’ Post under a big-top tent. So rain or shine, all festivities will go on. This year’s barbeque will be beef provided by local beef producers. The beef barbeque begins at 5:00 PM. The dance follows from 8:00 PM. to midnight, with music provided by the popular live band “Silverwood.” Admission to the barbeque and the dance will be by donation.

Garrison Fun Day is sponsored by the Garrison Emergency Services Foundation and the Hitchin’ Post. The Garrison Emergency Services Foundation Inc. is a non-profit organization serving the needs of the Garrison Fire Department, The Garrison Fire Department, Garrison First Responders, and Garrison Emergency Services Auxiliary assist with the event. All proceeds of the foundation are used for improvements to Garrison Emergency Services.
