The Benton County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing for the purpose of receiving input and suggestions from the general public concerning a proposed application to the Iowa Department of Economic Development for funding assistance through the Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. Community Development Block Grants are intended to benefit primarily low and moderate-income persons, improve the general living conditions of the area served, and to expand economic development opportunity. If funded, the grant would provide assistance for the development of water improvements to benefit residents of the Timber Ridge Mobile Home Park located approximately four miles south of Shellsburg, Iowa. Also to be considered are community development and housing needs, to be included as part of the application.

The public hearing will be held Tuesday, October 26, 2010, at 9:30 a.m., at the Benton County Courthouse (2nd Floor – 111 E. Fourth Street, Vinton, Iowa). For more information concerning this public hearing, please contact Mr. Gary Hughes, Grant Writer / Administrator with the East Central Iowa Council of Governments (ECICOG), 700 16th Street N.E., Cedar Rapids, IA 52402 (319-365-9941 ext. 129).

Published the 12th, 13th, & 15th days of October 2010.

GG October 12, 2010, 9:34 pm I have to ask. Why would you NOT apply for a grant? The debt money is already there. Grab it while you can. Improving anyones living conditions is very important. I just don\'t agree with the way it\'s being done. It should be handled locally, not from the big Federal pot of money. It sounds good, but I guarantee there will come with that, a bigger fist of control on one thing or another. I just love the idea that my taxes go to help support the lower income family. Do you really believe that your taxes siphoned from your check every week from the feds,or from our Great State of Iowa, actually will end up doing all you wish it would? Wouldn\'t it be nice if you could direct a portion of your mandated tax \"donation\" to a cause of your own that you could also verify. Are not grants just redistributed taxes anyway? If a grant is being offered, WHY THE DEBATE? Believe it or not, everyone is going to experience some sort of extra hit to their pocket books in these times. May as well give up and \"accept\" the \"gift\" from our Federal Government without question or debate. Get your marching shoes on. Times are changing. Nuff said.
