Minutes of the Regular Meeting Board of Directors Vinton-Shellsburg Community Schools October 18, 2021
Call to Order
President Rob Levis called the regular meeting to order at 5:31 p.m. in the Central Office Board Room
Roll Call / Pledge of Allegiance
Sue Gates, Kathy Van Steenhuyse, Rob Levis, Mike Timmermans, Tom Burke, Jake Fish, Becky Williams, Kyle Koeppen, Superintendent, and Brenda Barkdoll Board Secretary/Treasurer were present.
Receive Visitors/Public Comments
FFA chapter officers shared information for the 2021-22 school year.
A public comment was made regarding safety concerns about lighting.
Administrator Reports
Matt Kingsbury shared information on professional development, parent/teacher conferences, Veterans' Day assembly, and school recognition for engineering program through Project Lead the Way.
Tony Islas shared information on virtual academy and alternative high school program.
Kyle Reeve shared information on professional development,Hero's week, special education, fundraiser, Halloween celebrations, and Parent/Teacher conferences. He also mentioned new interventionist is working well and food service passed 100% with food inspection.
Administrators provided verbal reports in correspondence.
Superintendent Reports
Superintendent Koeppen reported on enrollment, Veteran's Program, Esports team, facilities study, insurance update, open enrollment requests, and the calendar.
Board Reports/Requests
Sue Gates and Kathy Van Steenhuyse attended the cold war museum at the high school and would like to see the project continue.
General Business of the Board
Consent Items 1087.
It was moved by Van Steenhuyse and seconded by Gates to accept the consent items as presented. Motion carried 7/0.
COVID Status and Attendance Data Superintendent Koeppen shared information on the COVID status and attendance.
School Improvement Advisory Committee Report
The School Improvement Advisory Committee shared information on District Strategic Plan, profile of a graduate, Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress data, fall benchmark data and work for future meetings.
Proclamation for American Education Week
1088.
It was moved by Williams and seconded by Fish to proclaim November 15-19, as American Education Week. Motion carried 7/0.
Audience comments on any of the preceding items
A member of the audience commented on recognition of engineering program through Project Lead the Way and math testing scores.
