Monday night Benton County found the two major political parties holding the biennial caucus. It's a time for each party to create the platform that will go on to the state level outlining what each precinct would like to see included. This is also the time that each party officially begins the search for candidates to fill seats in the upcoming election.
Democrats will look at what the Republicans are doing in Des Moines and come up with a blueprint for what they'd like to see their party represent. Republicans also map out their goals for the future of the party.
The caucuses are also a time for candidates to introduce themselves as candidates to fill or run against incumbents in the upcoming election. The top position of governor will be on the ballot this year as well as Chuck Grassley and Ashley Hinson's seats. The newly formed Iowa Senate District 42, which covers most of Benton County and the rural areas of Linn County will also be up for grabs.
The next large political event will be on Tuesday, June 7th when the primary is held.
