Virginia Gay Hospital will recognize the important role that imaging has had on the field of medicine during National Radiologic Technology Week, Nov. 2-8, 2014. The heart of “Rad Tech” Week is X-ray Discovery Day, observed on Nov. 8.

Medical imaging has grown by leaps and bounds since the X-ray was first discovered in 1895. According to Monica L. Stark RT(R),(CT),(BD), X-Ray Coordinator the lasting impression that the X-ray has had on patient care holds far-reaching significance.

“Most people know that the X-ray is used to produce images of bones in the body,” she said. “What people don’t know is that X-rays are used in highly sophisticated radiology systems that perform medical tests such as cardiac stress tests and thyroid scans, as well as interventional and therapeutic treatments.”

Virginia Gay Hospital performs over 9000 X-ray exams annually using advanced radiology systems, including mammograms, ultrasounds, CT scans and general diagnostic radiology. The radiology staff at Virginia Gay Hospital includes over 30 radiologists with 10 radiologic technologists.

“The X-ray’s impact on patient outcomes and our ability to provide quality care is incredible, allowing physicians to quickly and accurately detect, diagnose and treat injury, illness and disease,” Monica said. “We’re excited to celebrate our radiology department’s achievements during this commemorative week.”

Rad Tech Week activities will include: Word Search filled with terms familiar to radiology, and Build your own Nacho bar.
