AmeriCorps NCCC in Vinton sends members home

As a results of President Trump's administration's Department of Government Effeciency, it has directed that AmeriCorps NCCC send their volunteers home this week, affecting the Vinton campus directly. In a press release from Vinton Mayor, Bud Maynard, he sums up beautifully the thoughts of the community of Vinton concerning the dismissal of the AmeriCorps NCCC volunteers.

Vinton Parks and Recreation shares exciting plans for Vinton

Vinton Parks and Recreation director Matt Boggess spoke with the Vinton Kiwanis Club at their Tuesday meeting last week. Boggess shared several of the projects that are happening through the department. As part of the Iowa's Living Roadways Community Envisioning Program and Trees Forever, Vinton was presented with several ideas to beautify Vinton. Scott Wirth has been taking the lead on this project.

Reynolds announces submission of federal waiver for Medicaid work requirements

Gov. Reynolds requests Presidential Disaster Declaration for severe weather

Governor Kim Reynolds has requested a Presidential Disaster Declaration for four Iowa counties due to significant severe weather conditions that occurred on March 19, 2025. Gov. Reynolds requested funding under the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Public Assistance Program for Crawford, Harrison, Monona, and Woodbury counties for significant damage to public infrastructure and private property caused by the severe weather.

Iowa FFA Announces 2025 Stars Over Iowa Finalists

The 2025 Stars Over Iowa Finalists were selected for recognition as part of the 97th Iowa FFA State Leadership Conference at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa, April 13-15, 2025. Twenty finalists were selected in four different areas: Agribusiness, Agricultural Placement, Agricultural Production and Agriscience. The finalists were selected from a pool of more than 900 FFA members that will earn the Iowa FFA Degree— the highest honor the Iowa FFA Association can bestow upon an FFA member.

Iowa boat registrations expire April 30

Iowans will register more than 220,000 boats before April 30, when current boat registrations expire. Boat registrations are good for three years. Registration fees support boater education and safety, water trails, navigation enforcement and aquatic invasive species.Boat owners may bring their current registration to any Iowa county recorder’s office when they renew.

Four Reserve officers join the Vinton Police Department

Joshua Meyer having his badge pinned on by his daughter Mayor Bud Maynard administered the Oath of Office to four men desiring to serve as reserve officers for the Vinton Police Department. The four included Joshua Meyer, Matt Milburn, Brandan Geiger and Blake Hansen.Police Chief Ted Paxton spoke before the ceremony and thanked the men for stepping up to serve in the department. The four will be riding along with other officers for training purposes.

Jeff Morrison created this map of newspapers across the state. In an article entitled, "Changes to Iowa's newspaper landscape, 2019 to 2025" - Bleeding Heartland the author gives a bleak look at the newspaper industry in Iowa. The author, Jeff Morrison took the time to track down all of the newspapers left in the state and made a map of the reality of print news. According to Morrison there are 51 Iowa newspapers in the 99 counties.
