Iowa Schools Invited to Apply for Lt. Gov. STEM Education Scholarship Program

The National Lieutenant Governors Association (NLGA) has opened the application period for the annual Lt. Governors’ STEM Scholarship Program, sponsored by ACT, to award up to $1,000 to 12 schools nationally to support STEM-related activities for youth. Applications will be accepted until May 1, 2023, with award recipients announced and funded in Summer 2023.

Vinton Kiwanis host hundreds of children at Annual Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Bunny gets a hug from one of the bunny's tiny fans Weeks of preparation go into the annual five minute Easter Egg hunt each year. This year the Vinton Kiwanis Club provided a bit of fun for the area children on Saturday morning at the Kiwanis Park. Children of all ages arrived eagerly with baskets, buckets and bags. A few minutes before the hunt began, the children had a chance to visit with the Easter Bunny.

Gov. Reynolds Statement on Biden Administration Proposed Change to Title IX

   Governor Kim Reynolds released the following statement in response to the Biden Administration's newly proposed change to Title IX rules, allowing biological men to participate in women’s sports:   “Generations of women have fought for Title IX and the opportunity to compete. This new rule, proposed by the Biden Administration, creates a loophole for biological men to unfairly compete in women’s sports.

Drive Your Tractor to School Day - A Giant Hit!

By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke On March 22nd, 2023 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter hosted their annual Drive Your Tractor to School Day event. This year the chapter had their biggest turnout with a total of 17 tractors driven which was quite an improvement over previous years. After school the chapter gathered to get a group picture and then traveled safely with a police escort to Tootsies to get some ice cream to celebrate the amazing turnout.

Awww Hail...NO!!!

Golf ball sized hail a few blocks north of the middle school. Photo courtesy of Kord Sellers Tuesday night in Vinton got a bit dicey with the storms passing through the area. Hail hit Vinton in all kinds of sizes. In the area next to the middle school there was marble-sized hail while just a few blocks north it was golf ball sized.  In other parts of town, there were quarter-sized pieces landing. Here are just a few examples!

Car show in Downtown Vinton

An old tradition is returned for race fans of The Bullring.What used to be an annual event to kick off the season at Benton County Speedway, the annual car show on the streets of downtown Vinton made its return for the second year in downtown Vinton.Sponsored and hosted by Ron Da Voo Lounge and Deli, competitors at The Bullring were invited to put their cars on display.

It was just a dumpster fire

A dumpster fire began behind Vinton Family Dentistry on Sunday afternoon. The fire was large enough to send black plumes of smoke into the air to alert area residents. The fire was easily extinguished by the Vinton Fire Department. It's guessed that it might have been started by a tossed cigarette or construction materials. While waiting for the fire trucks, a resident kept it in check with a garden hose until the department arrived.
