Sue Gates Recognized for 25 Years of Service

Sue Gates was recognized on Tuesday at the Vinton Noon Kiwanis club meeting for her 25 years of service in the Kiwanis Club.Presenting her a plaque in recognition of her service, Tom Husnik said of Gates, "Sue is always one of the first members to volunteer to help with a project.  She is always willing to serve the community whether it’s as an Elementary Principal,  a school board member, or a Kiwanian.

The Crag is now open at the VPRD rec center and several other projects are in the works If there is one department in Vinton that will make your head spin, in a good way, it's Vinton Parks and Rec. If you think that the department couldn't possibly come up with any more cool projects, well, you'd be wrong. Among the activities in town that VPRD has available is a new rock climbing wall, "The Crag" which is located at the rec center.

One dies, a second injured in attempt to evade police

One man is dead following a police chase through Linn and Benton County. The chase began in Atkins, beginning at 3:49 a.m. on Wednesday morning.A Linn County Sheriff’s deputy saw a silver Dodge Grand Caravan that displayed no license plates and was acting suspiciously in a residential area in Atkins. The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle after it failed to stop at a stop sign.

Shellsburg Elementary Celebrates Favorite Book Character

Students at Shellsburg Elementary dressed as their favorite character Tuesday, Shellsburg Elementary students were invited to dress up like the favorite book character. Hands down, Harry Potter had the most look likes. But the cat in the hat made an appearance as well as Waldo, although I couldn't find him.Some of the students arrived just as themselves they said with a grin. FFA Sub-District Event

By: Annabelle Newton, Co-ReporterOn Wednesday, February 24, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had 22 members compete in Leadership Development Contests at the Sub-District level. Some have spent months preparing for their contests and on the Friday prior, they presented community members for an official run through. These members spent the afternoon at Hawkeye Community College competing.

Area man injured in car accident

ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 2021, AT ABOUT 11:14 PM, THE BENTON COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE RESPONDED TO A REPORT OF A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT NEAR 5418 22 AV TR, ABOUT 2 MILES SOUTH OF MT AUBURN IN BENTON COUNTY. A WHITE 2016 KIA OPTIMA, WITH A SINGLE OCCUPANT, LOST CONTROL AND CRASHED.  THE VEHICLE WAS OCCUPIED BY A 40 YR OLD MALE FROM MT AUBURN.

Train Derails West of Vinton

Iowa Northern Railway train derails in the snow on Monday afternoon Monday afternoon a train with the Iowa Northern Railroad derailed. This happens due to the snowfall. These hardworking men worked several hours to get the train back on the track. Three were no injuries reported. 

TREES FOREVER OPENS FUNDING TO DERECHO IMPACTED COMMUNITIES

Planting Hope grants up to $5,000 are now available for tree planting projectsTrees Forever is announcing that funding is now available to derecho affected communities in Iowa and Illinois through a new grant program called Planting Hope. Funding up to $5,000 will be awarded for tree planting and distribution projects and will assist in replanting areas that saw major canopy loss as a result of the August 2020 derecho.

DERECHO ASSISTANCE HELPS BENTON COUNTY

Benton County set to absorb some of Linn County Derecho storm damage The Benton County Conservation Board (BCCB) has received a tremendous opportunity to support and expand ongoing projects by stockpiling mulch debris from the August 10, 2020 derecho on two conservation properties. The wood cuttings will be piled and compacted to a height of six feet. In keeping the height at six feet or less, it has been determined that the risk for fire is extremely low.
