Donations collected for Wildthunder Wildlife and Animal Rehabilitation and Sanctuary

This is just some of the donations collected last night for WildthunderWildlife and Animal Rehabilitation and Sanctuary in Independence, as well as $400.00. All of the donations are appreciated and willbe delivered this morning. As person after person came to donate, a young teenager who had been saving a long time for vacation money, gladly gave her $100.

Fence/electrical equipment damaged, dog killed in two traffic incidents near Kersten's Christmas light display

Heidi Kersten received the bad news while at work Wednesday that her dog had been killed by a car. She hurried home to find that a sequence of events had led to the dog's death. At around 2 p.m. or so, a driver lost control, and his vehicle left the gravel roadway (22nd Avenue) and entered the west ditch, knocking down a section of fence, and damaging some electrical equipment belonging to the East Central REC, as well as Kersten.

Vinton man dies in Highway 30 crash in Linn County

The Linn County Sheriff's Office has identified the man who died in a Wednesday morning crash on Highway 30 west of Cedar Rapids as John Gibbs, 62, of Vinton. Authorities say Gibbs was the driver whose eastbound sedan left the roadway, entered the median and collided with some sand barrels and then re-entered the roadway, into the path of a vehicle driven by Bruce Gardner, 67, of Garrison.

Conference Champs! VS/CPU defeats only other WaMaC boys swimming team

By Rob Levis, Coach Tuesday night the Vinton-Shellsburg Center Point Urbana swim team hosted Williamsburg in the battle for the WaMaC at the Iowa Braille School. The Stormin' Vikings took the mythical crown with a strong 67-27 victory over the Raiders in a show-down between the only two WaMaC schools with swim programs. On senior night the four Stormin' Vikes' seniors came up big.

Iowa State University announces fall 2017 Dean's List 

Approximately 9,575 Iowa State University students have been recognized for outstanding academic achievement by being named to the fall semester 2017 Dean's List. The following students were named to the Dean's List must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.50 on a 4.00 scale while carrying a minimum of 12 credit hours of graded course work.

Wildthunder: Independence sanctuary caring for 300 animals rescued from Vinton residence

Along with the Cedar Valley Humane Society, an Independence animal sanctuary is helping to care for hundreds of animals that were taken from a Vinton home yesterday. Tracy Belle of the Wildthunder Wildlife and Animal Rehabilitation and Sanctuary said she and others there are caring for 300 of the more exotic animals found in the Vinton home of Babs Galkowski.
