Rick and Paula Murphy visited Virginia Gay Hospital on Saturday, to present $11,5000 in checks to VGH Administrator Mike Riege.  The proceeds from the 14th Annual Murphy Memorial Golf Tournament will help those who are unable to afford medical care. Of that total, $5,000 will go toward the VGH charity account and $6,500 toward the Gifts of Hope fund, which pays for mammography services for women who cannot afford them.

By Jill Ament Maple 4 started week one with the Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association (NMMBA) waking up between 5 and 5:30 in the morning and heading out the door of their bunkhouse in the Pigeon River Country State Forest by 6 a.m. The team then began their hour-long commute under the deep, pine canopies outside of Vanderbilt, Mich. “The commute wasn’t that bad really,” said Maple 4 member JJ Moses of Lyons, Mich.

The Vinton Police Department, Fire Department, and North Benton Ambulance were dispatched to a field behind Theisen's Supply in Vinton at approximately 10:32 a.m. this morning for a report of an aircraft down. The aircraft, a crop dusting helicopter, reportedly experienced engine problems during take-off, and the pilot, Dick Sluke of Montana, was forced to make an off-field landing of the aircraft shortly after departing Farm Service in Vinton.

If you haven't eRegistered yet, Tuesday, August 6 is the last day for the Convenience Fee Waiver on Payschools to pay online. Wednesday starts with the $4 additional fee again.  If you missed the Registration Day yesterday, you'll need to do it online from home or go to one of the school buildings between 8am-4pm to eRegister and pay there.

Volleyball players are working on setting. Football players learned the basics, including how and where to form a huddle and then quickly move to the line of scrimmage after the QB calls the play. The younger players also learned what it means for an offensive lineman to pull as the team began running some offensive plays.  Band members worked on their music by section before heading outside to learn their marching routine.

Benton County Sheriff Randall Forsyth reports that deputies answered 323 calls for service and investigated 19 accidents. Deputies attempted to serve 258 civil papers and issued 64 traffic citations and 115 traffic warnings. There were 27 arrests/juvenile referrals with 37 charges being filed in July 2013. See the arrest log HERE. (15) were simple misdemeanors, (15) were indictable misdemeanors, and (7) were felony charges.
