Celebration Park update: Work on fire pit, benches continues this week

Members of the AmeriCorps NCCC Oak 3 team have been building the fire pit at Celebration Park this week. literally brick-by brick. Team members also plan to begin work on the benches for the fire pit area this week.

VPRD Director Duane Randall said the stones for the river wall are in place; soon passers-by will see that project begin to take shape. Work on the wall was delayed because of high water levels earlier this year.

DS August 13, 2013, 12:41 pm Does it bother anybody that the City violated state law by not having an architect design the structures and publicly bidding this project? When the City committed money to this project, they violated Iowa Code 26.3, 26.5, and 26.6 (look it up). If the City had not decided to commit funds to make up Mr. Randall\'s budget overruns, then what Duane Randall was doing by funding with donations was completely legal, but in my opinion, unwise. It is hard for me to sit and be silent when this park is being praised when I know laws were broken to build it.
