The Legacy Quilt; proceeds from American Legion Riders raffle will benefit veterans.

The Department of Iowa Mid Winter Conference was held Feb. 14,15 & 16th in Des Moines. During the Legion and Auxiliary Joint meeting held on Friday, our Chapter was one of three who received a recognition plaque for our donation to The Legacy Scholarship Fund. In order to be eligible to receive this, a donation of $750.00 or larger is required. There were 6 of our members present to accept this for our Chapter. The weather caused a lower attendance than usual, I thought.

The American Legion Riders of Shellsburg Post 166 are raffling two Harley Davidson t-shirt quilts to aid our fundraising efforts to help veterans and their families.

The Iowa quilt, as we call it, is made of donations by Harley Davidson dealerships across Iowa. The drawing for this will be held at the end of our 5th Annual Charity Ride on June 7th.

The donations for what we deemed The Legacy Quilt were gathered during the 2013 Legacy Ride. This ride was held August 18-22, 2013. More than $334,000 was raised during the ride, as nearly 400 riders rode the 1,300 miles from Indianapolis to League City,Texas. This drawing will be held on August 16th in Indianapolis on the eve of the 2014 Legacy Ride. The Legacy Scholarship Fund is for children who have suffered the loss of a parent during Active Duty since 9/11/2001. They have sacrificed enough and deserve our help.

Both quilts have exceeded our expectations by far. The American Legion Riders cannot come up with the words to thank those responsible for making this endeavor a reality.
