On Tuesday, July 20, four Boy Scouts from Vinton's Troop 47 boarded a bus in Cedar Rapids and departed on a once-in-a-lifetime trip. Their final destination: the Boy Scouts of America 100th Anniversary Jamboree. The seventeen day trip began with a stop at the Civil War battlefields of Gettysburg PA, a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, a group picture on the steps of the US Capitol and a tour of the US Capitol. And this is just the first three days. After five days touring the museums and monuments of Washington DC the group heads to Fort AP Hill, Virginia for the Jamboree. While at the Jamboree, Scouts will have opportunity to check out hundreds of activities. They can work on any of 125 or so Merit Badges, try their hand at SCUBA, learn amateur (Ham) radio operation, go through a military challenge course, experience mountain boarding (think off-road skateboarding) or take part in a recreation of the very first Boy Scout summer camp. They will hear the President of the United States speak at the opening ceremony and can meet astronauts, authors and top NASCAR car drivers. They can even participate in a world record yo-yoing event and another for CPR/AED training. More than 45,000 Scouts and leaders are expected to take part in the 10 day Jamboree. Another 300,000 people are expected to participate as "day visitors".
