FFA Awards Banquet

Every year the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter holds an Awards Banquet for the members who have shown success throughout the year in FFA. This year’s Awards Banquet was held on May 10th, with 42 members attending. These members, along with others that couldn’t make it the night of Banquet, received awards in different areas of FFA. Not only did FFA members receive awards, but community members who have supported the FFA were recognized as well.

The Banquet started off with a blessing from 2013-2014 Officer At Large, Timothy Haerther, and then the members and guest enjoyed a lovely dinner prepared by Merchants Grilling. When supper was finished the FFA meeting started, and that is when the recognition and awards began.

School Board members, such as Mr. Matt Kingsbury, Mr. Ryan Davis, Sue Gates, and Todd Wiley, were recognized, along with John Anderson, and Mr. and Mrs. Fisher for their continuous support towards the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter. Susie Henkle, Tina Eden, Diane Kenney, Craig Walker, and Scott Fleming were recognized as chaperones when the FFA members went to State Convention in Ames. Community members were also recognized for their contributions to our chapter’s Crop Plot, CDEs, and in other various ways throughout the year. Around 90 community members and organizations were recognized at that time.

The awards given to the FFA members were for leadership and skills CDEs along with Star Awards, Leadership-Merit Awards, Top Fruit Sellers recognition, Proficiency Awards, the SAE Award, Chapter Scholars, Outstanding Classman Awards, the Dekalb Winner, the Senior Service Award, scholarship winners, and recognition of the graduating members. There were also recognition awards for the three Honorary Degree, Jim Huber, Matt Kingsbury, and Tina Eden. These Honorary Degree recipients have been a huge support to the chapter and have aided the members in various activities.

Besides recognizing FFA Members and supporters of the FFA, the Awards Banquet is also the time that old officers retire and the new officers are introduced. The 2013-2014 Officer Team consisted of: Officer At Large-Timothy Haerther, Sentinel-Dillon Brummer, Reporters-Emily Cashman and Deion Dulin, Treasurer-Riley Ries, Secretary-Karley Kenney, Vice President-Jacob Patrilla, and President- Caleb Svoboda. The officers gave their retiring speech and gave recognition to their parents who had supported them throughout their time in office. After the Year In Review slide show, created by Co-Reporter Emily Cashman, the installation of the new officers occurred. The 2014-2015 Officer Team includes: Officer At Large- Stevie Henry, Sentinel-Drew Wiley, Reporters-Jessica Alderson and Katie Isbell, Treasurer-Sydney Walker, Secretary-Emily Reisch, Vice President-John Eden, and President-Riley Ries.
