The Vinton Lions Club held their regular Wednesday meeting at the Pizza Ranch. There were 48 members and two guests present. Member Bill Owens informed the members of the upcoming ACT I production of “13” that will be presented August 6,7,13,14 at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Auditorium at 7 pm, and August 8 and 15 at 2 pm. The play’s cast includes students from five different school districts.
Member Pat Lyons introduced his guest, Mike Timmermans. After 30 years in education with Vinton-Shellsburg Schools, Mr. Timmermans has taken a position as the administrator of the Virginia Gay Hospital Foundation.
Member Linus Winter introduced the club’s second guest, and featured speaker, Lions Club of Iowa Executive Secretary Gary Fry. Secretary Fry updated the members on the various programs the 400 Iowa Lions Clubs across the state have contributed to this past year. Some of the highlights included the State Lions Club website, www.iowalions.org, which gives members valuable information.
Another project the Vinton Lions Club proudly participated in is the Iowa KidSight program. This program has provided vision screenings to 32,000 children across the state. Secretary Fry told the members that just yesterday, Grant Wood AEA agreed to schedule the KidSight screenings for this part of the state for the upcoming year. Any preschool in the Grant Wood AEA service area that would like to schedule a vision screening should contact Grant Wood to set a date.
Executive Secretary Fry told the club membership that the Vinton Lions Club is one of the strongest Lions Clubs in the state. The Vinton Lions Club is one of the largest and most active service organizations in Vinton. Meetings are held at the Pizza Ranch at noon each Wednesday.
